Former UN inspector: The world is on the brink of a nuclear abyss because of US actions
The threat of nuclear conflict in the world has increased due to the actions of the United States. We must find levers of influence on the White House in order to create the preconditions for the opening of negotiations on arms control. This was stated by a former Marine Corps analyst, former UN inspector in charge of monitoring the elimination of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, Scott Ritter. He expressed his position at the online seminar of the International Schiller Institute.
According to Ritter, arms control is now virtually non-existent. The situation is similar to 1982, when the United States and the USSR avoided contact. Meanwhile, the only remaining control mechanism, the Treaty on Measures to Reduce and Further Limit Strategic Offensive Installations, will expire in February 2026. If not extended or replaced, the dangerous arms race between Moscow and Washington will step up.
The former UN inspector said that in 1982 consultations between the United States and Russia were facilitated by massive demonstrations by disarmament supporters. But from now on, the negotiations are impossible because of the position of influential structures in Washington, which are opposed to the exclusion of the American doctrine from the possibility of delivering a preventive nuclear strike. “The Russian people are so disappointed and alarmed by US policy that there is talk in influential Russian circles of including a pre-emptive nuclear strike in doctrine. The North Koreans are also talking about a preemptive nuclear strike. For what? Everyone is concerned about the United States, its nuclear arsenal, the irresponsible actions and statements of American leaders,” Ritter said.
In his opinion, perhaps now, as in 1982, large-scale protests could change the situation. Ritter insists that it is vital that a man comes to power after the US presidential election to deal with the problem of disarmament. Otherwise, a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons is not excluded in the next five years.
“We are on the brink of a nuclear abyss that we ourselves created…And if we sit idly by, we will continue to move toward disaster,” Ritter said.
