Important for Germans in spring – allergies, asparagus, weather, cars, GPS

– Published on:

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), spring could finally arrive in Germany next week, with temperatures reaching 20 degrees in all areas. Residents of the northern regions will be especially delighted with the sun.

A question that worries many on the eve of sunny days: Do I need UV protection? According to Gudrun Laszewski of the DWD Center for Medical and Meteorological Research, care should be taken in the sun, as UV rays can be very harmful to the skin. This means not only a tan, but also reddening of the skin in the event of an “overdose”. Therefore, it is recommended to take protective measures such as creams or caps now.

“The positive effect of ultraviolet radiation on the whole body is the formation of its own vitamin D in the body.” It plays an important role in bone metabolism, cancer prevention, autoimmune diseases and mental disorders.

How much will your favorite vegetable cost?

It is not yet possible to predict exactly how the price situation will develop, says Verena Hollenberg, who operates an asparagus farm in North Rhine-Westphalia. So far, selling prices have fluctuated between 10 and 20 euros per kilogram depending on the region, which is slightly higher than last year’s level.

According to the farmer, the main concern of the industry is the inequality of production conditions around the world due to the increase in the minimum wage in Germany.

When to change tires?

To this day, many drivers rely on the old O to O rule: winter tires are used from October to Easter. “But weather conditions can go beyond that, especially since Easter is not a fixed date,” says ADAC spokeswoman Katya Legner.

And even in our latitudes, snowfall is possible from October to April. When the night temperature stops constantly falling below 5 degrees, you can switch to summer tires. “But if you want to be on the safe side, it’s worth waiting a little longer,” says Vincenzo Luca from TĂĽv SĂĽd.

Cyclists – what to pay attention to

Spring is the start of the cycling season. But it ends abruptly when the two-wheeled friend falls victim to thieves. What can help and what type of insurance is able to cover the damage?

Proper locking

Chain, folding, disc or armored cable locks are suitable for this. The Rhineland-Palatinate Criminal Investigation Office and the Rhineland-Palatinate Consumer Advisory Center recommend that you always secure your bicycle with its frame, front and rear wheels to a solid object. Thus, thieves will not be able to take it away.

GPS transmitter and app

If the bike is stolen, a pre-installed GPS tracker with an app can help locate it. Coding or other identification would provide an added benefit. The police can use information such as the frame number or the code number to identify the bike. This data can be entered into the bike passport, which is also available as an app.

Theft insurance

According to the GDV, home contents insurance also covers wheels if they’ve been stolen from locked pantries, basements or apartments. The replacement cost will be refunded. The theft of a stationary bicycle on the open road may be covered by the endorsement corresponding to the contract.

When will the pollen fly?

For many people with hay fever, it should be borne in mind that the pollen count in Germany varies greatly from region to region.

“Only under favorable conditions, i.e. sunlight, temperatures of 12-13 degrees Celsius and no night frosts, does the pollen really start to fly – then high levels of exposure are enough currents,” says Matthias Werhahn, landscape ecologist at the German Pollen Information Service Foundation.

Typical symptoms of this period are watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, coughing and fatigue. Nasal sprays, eye drops, and tablets can be used to combat these conditions. The cause of the disease is eliminated by immunotherapy, for example injections or tablets (hyposensitization).
