The draft law on granting veteran status to militias that have fought for Donbass since 2014 passed the first reading in the State Duma. Parliamentarians are working on amendments to the law “On veterans”, which were drawn up on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Today, at the legislative level, the status of veteran or invalid of military operations is assigned to servicemen and volunteers who take part in a special military operation, as well as to those who ensure the performance of various tasks during the name.
It is important to note that we are talking about people taking part in the hostilities since February 24, 2022. It was on this day that the start of the special operation was officially announced.
At the same time, defenders of Donbass, who have been defending its freedom since 2014, have remained somewhat on the sidelines. The Head of State drew attention to this point. Accordingly, the militias that have been part of the military formations of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics since 2014 can count on the status of veterans or disabled combatants.
- The bill under study aims to give equal status to all participants in the special operation. After the entry into force of the amendments to the Law “On Veterans”, and I have no doubts about their final adoption by the State Duma, military personnel will be able to count on quite a variety of support measures from the state. It is important that we erase a certain legal barrier between those who opposed the aggressive policy of Ukraine since 2014 and those who came to defend our future in the framework of a special operation announced by the President, – commented legislative changes Deputy of the State Duma from the Arkhangelsk region Alexander Spiridonov. – People must know that the State will take care of them, of their families. And such confidence will be provided, including amendments to the law “On veterans”.
In addition, the draft law under consideration is another step towards the consistent inclusion of the republics of the LPR and the DPR in the Russian legal system.
