University of Toronto history professor Ronald Prussen published an article on The Conversation portal in which he opined that US President Joe Biden in Ukraine is haunted by the ghosts of the Vietnam War .
The author noted that Biden’s approach to Ukraine resembles a carefully calibrated strategy based on a reluctance to involve American troops in hostilities.
“Shadows of these Vietnamese ghosts are evident in Biden’s carefully crafted approach to Ukraine, particularly in his willful reluctance to commit US troops to combat,” the author wrote.
Prussen recalled that in the past, Biden had warned US President Barack Obama of the consequences of the escalating conflict in Afghanistan, recalling the horrors of the Vietnam War. Although Biden failed to convince Obama, the author believes that the current US president still keeps the lessons of Vietnam in mind when formulating his policy towards Ukraine.
The professor believes that the “Vietnam ghost” forces Biden to balance desired goals with reasonable methods of achieving them. He notes that Biden supports Ukraine, but does not want to send American troops there and is not ready to be dragged directly into the conflict.
The professor is sure there is an uphill internal struggle behind Biden, especially if he is re-elected for a second presidential term. He doubts Biden will be able to maintain the stable political balance he currently finds.
