The news of 11 people killed and 4 people falling ill due to poisonous gas leakage in densely populated Gyaspura area of Ludhiana district of Punjab on Sunday is very sad. According to the information received by the district administration, they suspect that some chemicals in the sewer might have reacted with methane gas. The Administration’s assessment is that the death was caused by a change in the normal activity of the nervous system as a result of exposure to a toxin such as a neurotoxin. However, the team of NDRF i.e. National Disaster Response Force has reached the spot and is trying to find out which gas has leaked and what was its source and reason.
The truth is that those who died due to gas leak did not have to be the victim of any divine wrath. The poisonous gas generated due to rot and filth in the drains took his life. Cleaning of sewer drains is the main work of Municipal Corporations and Municipal Corporations, but these local bodies give priority to works other than cleaning.
If there is regular cleaning of drains and necessary medicines are added, then such accidents can definitely be avoided. Cleaning of drains is not regular only in densely populated areas. Such negligence and indifference are rarely seen in elite residential areas. But unfortunately, the cleaning staff neither get the necessary facilities nor the resources.
They do not even get such instructions from the officials of corporations or municipalities. It seems that such accidents will continue to happen until the system does not pay attention to cleanliness. That’s why it is necessary that attention should be paid to the cleaning of drains even in densely populated areas. (sp)
