The US Air Force will abandon U-2 planes and RQ-4 drones in favor of satellites

The US Air Force plans to phase out U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and reconnaissance drones, reports Defense News.

The publication notes that according to the proposed US defense budget for fiscal year 2024, U – 2 and RQ – 4 should be replaced by satellites that transmit similar images of the Earth’s surface.

The publication reports that the drones should be decommissioned as early as next year, and the planes in 2026. Now U-2 planes are used for reconnaissance activities. The US Air Force has 27 of these aircraft on standby.

Earlier, the regional chief reported that Northrop Grumman had tested a new IVEWS electronic warfare system for the US Air Force’s F-16 fighter.
