Poveglia is a small island with a dark history of black plague, madness and sadism – Considered one of the most haunted places in the world and strictly forbidden to visit

– Published on:

There are a number of places in the world that are said to be inhabited by ghosts and other beings or spirits of dimensions unknown to us. At least not yet.

The island of Poveglia is undoubtedly considered one of the scariest.

The island is off the coast of mainland Italy and for centuries those who were considered undesirables in society were sent there – to die.

The Black Death killed 60% of Europeans.
Can be traced back to the Roman Empire

The island’s dark history dates back to the Roman Empire, when they were sent there to suffer from plagues and infectious diseases, which were like mice on a dunghill in the congestion of this then largest and most the most densely populated. in the world.

History repeated itself in the 18th century when the Black Death hit Europe, killing 60% of the continent’s population. The Black Death was a form of lymphadenopathy, contagious and killing people quickly. If there was any suspicion of the Black Death, they tried to get rid of that person as soon as possible.

Poveglia is tiny, but with around 160,000 graves.
160 thousand graves

A magnificent fort was built on the island in 1793 to ensure that the infected could not reach anything, and it was used until 1814.

It is said that around 160,000 infected people were sent to this small island, to die there, and apparently there was little room left to bury the dead when the plague finally ended.

More than half of the island will contain the graves of the dead, but it has never been fully explored.

The island is small and difficult to find, and Emperor Napoleon used it, among other things, to hide weapons.

From the old mental asylum.
A mental asylum with a sadist as head doctor

Poveglia proved to be a decent place for undesirables over the centuries and in 1922 a mental asylum was established there. It will not have been under any control of the authorities who wanted to know as little as possible about the activities of the island.

It will have been governed by a head doctor, who today can only be described as sadistic. Or so the story goes. It is said that he tortured patients for fun but had less interest in curing them. Or generally knowing if something was bothering them.

The ghosts of those who died as a result of the Black Death are said to have taken up residence in many patients, including the chief medical officer who slaughtered his patients without mercy.

Then he died falling from the island’s clock tower, but no one knows if he jumped or was pushed.

What did people see on the island that they refuse to talk about?
No one wants to discuss their experiences

They lived in the vicinity of the island and were careful not to approach it, and the fishermen preferred to put their lives in the hands of the sea during storms rather than landing on the shores of Poveglia.

A few brave people took a trip to the island, but it is said that no one wanted to discuss their experiences living there.

The psychiatric hospital was closed in 1968 after massive public protests when it was revealed how patients had been treated.

It is said that Poveglia is one of the most haunted places in the world.

The buildings on the island are said to be haunted.
Accidents and unexplained deaths

The Italian government tried to change the face of the island, it was put up for sale in 2014, but no one was buying it. Groups of construction workers were sent to renovate the mental hospital, intending to turn it into a hotel or something, but they quickly returned after a few days and swore never to return.

The island was once a popular destination for those seeking ghosts and other similar phenomena, but the number of accidents and unexplained deaths prompted the Italian government to ban all visits to the island.

So if you want to visit the ghosts of Poveglia, it’s no less than a prison sentence in Italy today.
