National Dialogue Coordinator in Egypt: There are parties trying to obstruct it

Rashwan explained in an interview with “Sky News Arabia” that all demands made by the forces and parties of the civil movement (a framework that includes right-wing, left-wing and nationalist opposition parties) have been met. exception of certain points which are implemented.

The General Coordinator of the National Dialogue stressed that there are “obstacles”, and that there are parties who try to hinder the dialogue, according to him.

He added that Egypt had lacked dialogue for many years, and “this is what President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi personally acknowledged when he spoke of political reform, the time for which has come.”

Responding to a question about the year-long dialogue delay, Rashwan explained, “We have been through a year of building bridges and unblocking, and we never underestimate the size of a political, social force , intellectual or civil in Egypt”.

Rashwan said: “Last year, hundreds of unannounced meetings took place between all parties, in order to restore one thing, which is trust.”

And he added that many features of the dialogue will appear next week, because “the National Dialogue Board has received thousands of names, and it certainly has hundreds of topics, and it includes dozens of parties.”

He continued: “A year seems short in the face of the need to coordinate a balanced, successful and satisfying graduation image of the dialogue partners, and finally to propose recommendations that can be implemented, in the form of legislation or decisions of the president. of the Republic.”

Rashwan said the dialogue board comprises 19 members, and all of them are accepted by all parties.

He added: “The civil movement was the first to demand that the dialogue include economic and social issues in the declaration of May 8, and underlined the need to address these issues. The broader the dialogue, the more it will be. representative to people and will serve unofficial viewpoints.”

Speaking about civil demands for the release of those allegedly arrested due to public opinion in Egypt, Rashwan said he was taking part in the first unannounced preparation sessions for the dialogue, and “it was at a very high level, and they contained all the symbols and leaders of the civil movement, and figures were put forward for detainees whose release the movement is asking for.” Even so-called prisoners of conscience.

And he continued: “Some of them are in pre-trial detention and others have been sentenced, and the list that was presented during this session included 1,074 names, and it was leaked to the media at the time. in various ways, while the number of those that have been released so far has reached 1,280 names, which means that the list has been added.”
