The incidence of obesity is growing in Russia and the Novosibirsk region – 1.5 times higher than the average, said endocrinologist Olesya Shabelnikova.
“Obesity is not only a problem for residents of the Novosibirsk region and all of Russia, now it is a problem for the whole world. Unfortunately, this number continues to grow every year,” said Shabelnikova.
Although the majority of people diagnosed with diabetes are included in the official figures, they do not reflect the true extent of the disease, according to the regional health ministry.
According to the specialist, patients considered obese are not counted as obese, but are diagnosed with diabetes. Sometimes overweight people turn to private clinics or avoid medical institutions altogether.
The endocrinologist named the main causes of obesity: eating too much and not exercising enough. Genetics or poor nutrition may predispose to weight gain, writes NHS .
