Mysterious earthquakes rock Denmark and baffle scientists. Their magnitude is about 3 on the Richter

At first it was believed that earthquakes cause earthquakes. Then seismologists speculated that it came from controlled explosions in Poland, more than 140 kilometers to the south.

On Monday, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, an official body that monitors the subsoil, said the tremors “were not caused by earthquakes, but by pressure waves from an event in atmosphere” but came from an “unknown source”.

“Seismology experts can say that it is unlikely that the tremors were triggered by a controlled explosion in Poland, which took place shortly before the first reports of earthquakes in Bornholm,” the agency added. , known as GEOS, in a statement.

On Saturday, Geos said it had received more than 60 reports from citizens of Bornholm that “earthquake-like tremors”, described as deep rumbling, tremors and varying pressure in the ear, were reported in the afternoon in Bornholm.

No one was injured by the phenomenon. Police said members of the public had also contacted them to report the earthquake in the eastern part of the island. Danish media reported that the earthquake caused a crack in the wall of a house.

Geos said the seismic tremors were measured at a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale.

Polish authorities said there was intense activity during the “Anaconda 23” maneuvers in Ustka, northern Poland, involving fighter jets and live artillery fire.

GEOS, an independent research and consultancy company within the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, said it has two seismometers in Bornholm which collect data around the clock.

It should be noted that Bornholm, which has almost 40,000 inhabitants, is a rocky island in the Baltic Sea located in the south of Sweden, in the northeast of Germany and in the north of Poland.
