Cardiologist Polyaeva warned that hypertension can cause blindness

October 2, 2025

High blood pressure can damage the blood vessels in the eyes, leading to partial vision loss and blindness. About this complication of hypertension in an interview Izvestia warns cardiologist Irina Polyaeva.

According to the cardiologist, there is no single cause that leads to the development of hypertension. She noted that several factors most often contribute to this: heredity, the aging process and diet; physical inactivity can also be a contributing factor.

She added that hypertension is a common disease that affects about a third of the world’s population.

Polyaeva believes that people with high blood pressure often have impaired kidney function and may develop chronic kidney failure. High blood pressure also damages the sensory vessels in the eyes, leading to poor vision or blindness.

The doctor warned that hypertension has no specific symptoms, but frequent headaches in the back of the head, dizziness or tinnitus can indicate it. To prevent heart disease, Polyaeva recommended changing her lifestyle: giving up alcohol and smoking, adding greens and vegetables to the diet, and exercising regularly.
