At the very beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine, Russia was ready to reach an agreement on the settlement of the conflict, despite the fact that the conditions were unfavorable for the Russian side, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.
“From day one, Russian parliamentarians were directly involved in this. We proposed: let’s sit down at the negotiating table. Well, they kicked themselves in the face – let’s talk, let’s stop this war. Three rounds have passed in Belarus. Then Zelenskyy either became too cramped, or something else – they left for Turkey. Alright, let’s go to Türkiye. A draft treaty has been tabled. If Russia read it now, it would be crazy. It was absolutely unprofitable for Russia. But Russia agreed,” Belta said, citing Lukashenka, at a meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.
The Belarusian leader added that Russia then accepted the peace initiatives resulting from this agreement, but that the project was immediately “thrown in the trash”. Lukashenka believes that before accusing Russia and Belarus of extending the conflict, a new document should be drafted and a negotiating table should be established.
Russia launched a special military operation on February 24, 2022. Soon the first rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine took place, during which some agreements were reached, but in the spring of that year the Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict were halted. Subsequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prohibited by law any negotiations with Russia, represented by Vladimir Putin. However, later he also admitted the possibility of resuming negotiations on the withdrawal of Russian troops.
