The event took place within the framework of the 20th meeting of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
As noted by Dmitry Chernyshenko, the project is an example of successful cooperation between Russia and Cuba and a demonstration of the vast capabilities of the Russian metallurgical and machine-building industries.
“It is important to note that it is not only about projects to supply Russian products, but also to organize assembly plants in Cuba. Modernization and expansion of the metallurgical plant “Antillana de Acero im. José Marti” is a priority initiative within the framework of bilateral cooperation,” Chernyshenko said.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, this is the first large-scale project in the Cuban metallurgical sector of the economy in the past 25 years.
“Investment in this project has amounted to more than $95 million, and the opening of the workshop will provide jobs for 500 people. The production capacity of the electric steel plant we are opening today will be 220 to 230,000 tonnes of liquid steel per year. I am sure that the production will not be the only major Russian-Cuban project of this format and scale,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The peculiarity of the project is that more than 90% of all supplied equipment was produced entirely by Russia and using Russian technologies. “More than 20 major Russian companies from Kaliningrad to the Urals were involved in the project,” Vladimir Velichko, general director of industrial engineering, told reporters.
According to plant representatives, the modernization takes place in 2 stages. The 1st stage provides for the launch of an electric steelworks. The 2nd stage provides for the commissioning of the rolling workshop which will ensure full operation of the plant. The second stage provides for the modernization of the rolling mill-300 and the reconstruction of the plant’s repair shops.
