Artificial intelligence triggers new crisis due to ‘Nightingale’ voice cloning

In details, El-Khouly used the voice of the late artist Abdel Halim Hafez in a group of songs by singer Amr Diab.

With that, Al-Khouli says that the project is completely unofficial and is on trial, explaining, on his official Facebook page, that the purpose of the project is scientific research and development and keep pace with global development, and that the use of Nightingale’s voice is only a first preliminary experience.

He added that all artists’ rights as melodies and lyrics are reserved to them, also pointing out that the image of the nightingale was created by artificial intelligence and does not exist in reality.

“Failure and very bad experience”

On the other hand, Muhammad Shabana, the son of the Rossignol’s brother, posted a statement on his Facebook page, in which he said: “During the last few days, some attempts have been made to use the voice of my uncle Abdel Halim with AI technology and layer it on modern songs, and it was a failed and very bad experience.”

And he continued: “We will take legal action against the author, because it is a distortion of the story and the message of my uncle, the artist Abdel Halim Hafez, and therefore any person, entity or company that commits this act will be subject to legal liability, and we will take all dissuasive measures against it.”

And he added, “Abdul Halim’s voice belongs solely to his family with no one else, and everyone should be careful not to circulate these offensive clips, and if the family ever wants to use this technology, it will be of the highest degree of quality, craftsmanship and technology to enjoy lovers of the brown nightingale, and it will be with the satisfaction of its fans and lovers.” If he asks us to do so, and God is the grantor of the hit.”

Legal proceedings.. and the implementation of the idea is possible

In a special statement to ‘Sky News Arabia’, Muhammad Shabana said: “We will take all legal action against this person, as the case is very offensive and against the story of Abdel Halim and his artistic message, and no one can alter his voice because it belongs only to his family and to no one.

Asked about the possibility of their consent to use his voice using artificial intelligence technology, Shabana replied: “If this technology reaches the highest level of quality and professionalism, and we asked the public of Abdel Halim to experiment and we have confirmed the final shape of the work, so it is possible for us to think about this question.”

Rebirth of artistic heritage!

It was not the first time that artificial intelligence technology had been used to reproduce symbols in art. Composer Amr Mostafa previously announced a song composed by Umm Kulthum, explaining that it was a revival of artistic heritage.

However, music critic and historian Ashraf Abdel Rahman has demanded in previous statements to Sky News Arabia that legal action be taken by the Music Professions Syndicate to stop this distortion, “because we must let the greats who left us their immortal works remain in their splendour”, noting that this is considered “digging into graves”.

And he talked about concerts that used hologram technology and the difference between that and the use of artificial intelligence to evoke the voice of Umm Kulthum or artists in general, because he explained that the technology depends on the formal use and that there is no manipulation of sound, melodies or lyrics, but rather the embodiment of the artists of the Belle Époque on stage.

He pointed out that it gives a good impression to the viewer: “I see that there is no objection to this, and it is a positive use, but the use of artificial intelligence technology and manipulation of sound is distortion. Sound, words and melodies are basic vocabulary that should not be manipulated.”
