Journalists from the BBC Russian Service, together with Mediazona and a group of volunteers, managed to identify 24,005 Russian soldiers who died during the invasion of Ukraine.
In the past two weeks, journalists have learned the names of 1,361 other dead. As noted in the post, this still exceeds the average confirmed weekly loss figures throughout 2022.
The greatest number of casualties in recent months falls on detachments made up of convicts, the researchers note. The names of 4,315 dead prisoners are now known. We also know of the death of 2,293 mobilized Russians – 60% of them have died since December 1.
The Sverdlovsk region and the Krasnodar Territory continue to lead in terms of the number of confirmed victims.
Journalists collect information on dead Russian servicemen since the start of hostilities. The surveillance only includes people whose deaths have been established on the basis of open sources. The actual number of losses, according to the study authors, could be much higher. According to journalists, according to the most conservative estimate, Russia lost 48,000 people killed during the invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian Ministry of Defense does not disclose data on personnel losses and does not comment on the figures given by journalists.
