DeSantis’ campaign began Wednesday night with a Twitter disruption (blocked in Russia) where he announced his candidacy, but that didn’t seem to dampen donor enthusiasm. The candidate’s headquarters said it raised $1 million in an hour. The $8.2 million figure is higher than the $6.3 million Joe Biden raised in his first 24 hours as a candidate in 2019, according to The New York Times. That’s roughly double the $4 million the Donald Trump campaign said was raised within 24 hours of being charged with a crime earlier this year, though much of that money comes from online donations.
The amount DeSantis received includes both online donations and funds received from donors who gathered Thursday in the grand lobby of Miami’s Four Seasons hotel for a meeting with the governor. Those funds, observers say, will be needed by the candidate for his campaign tour, during which DeSantis will visit 12 cities in three states next week.
In the meantime
According to the publication, Casey DeSantis, wife of the Governor of Florida, is considered perhaps her husband’s most important adviser. She is now expected to play a vital role in his presidential campaign.
