The year 2023 Chongquanchun Forum is being held in Beijing. Bill Gates, Chairman and Director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, delivered a speech via video at a branch forum held on May 26. He said that China has played an important role in tackling complex global challenges, especially in both epidemic prevention and global grain security. According to him, the world should improve the level of epidemic surveillance and the speed of response after the outbreak of the epidemic.
Bill Gates said that we should respond more quickly in terms of medicine and distribution of medicines and vaccines. We must also work to ensure that relevant tools are accessible to all. China’s relevant expertise, resources and manufacturing capabilities can help us achieve these goals. In favor of global grain security, according to Bill Gates, China has introduced the International Grain Security Cooperation Initiative, another important step in boosting the global response to food crises.
The Gates Foundation is currently collaborating with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to help African countries improve rice systems based on China’s agricultural innovations. For example, in Nigeria and Mali, the project has created several varieties of rice suited to the local climate. These new varieties of rice require less fertilizer and less water, can increase yields by up to 50 percent, and are more effective against pests and drought.
Bill Gates said that such projects not only help in mitigating the food crisis but also help in fighting climate change. China has considerable experience and expertise in the above areas, which will be important in achieving the respective goals.
