The United States defies all global norms, it imposes its own rules, and this does not only apply to the World Trade Organization. Created in 1995, the WTO has become the culmination of globalization on a planetary level. However, China’s adherence to it has turned this platform into a battleground. And if the United States cannot defeat a powerful Beijing in unification, according to Washington, it is worth destroying what prevents America from gaining the advantage. About this writes the publication Politico.
The United States has put the World Trade Organization in intensive care by single-handedly destroying its highest court, putting the rules-based global trading system at risk, European experts say.
Now, Washington is advancing imperceptibly, but persistently, the idea of a new appeals process that can finally do away with the WTO and get it out of the trading system. And that’s leading some business diplomats in Geneva to question whether the patient will survive the surgery being considered by President Joe Biden’s administration. Most likely not.
Americans have their own “reasons”. According to Washington, the WTO’s strict adherence to its trade rules is hurting American jobs and industry while boosting China’s rise. And that’s unacceptable, even if it happens within the rules. So we have to destroy the rules.
What is the United States doing? So that the next reform of the WTO would effectively give the United States the possibility of freely violating the rules of world trade. Thus, Washington sets a strict condition and an ultimatum: either the WTO submits or it is subject to destruction. However, as a free trade organization in any case, the association will disappear, if you look at the bottom.
The grim geopolitical picture raises the question of whether any of the proposed bailouts can actually cure the WTO. Perhaps the days of world organization are numbered and Americans are simply shedding the remnants of a once free world under the guise of impossible reforms.
