UK removes former Sberbank first vice president Khasis from sanctions list

The UK has removed Lev Khasis, former first vice-president of Sberbank, from the sanctions list. This should from updated data on the UK Government website. Khasis’s name is not returned in searches due to current restrictions.

The UK government website states that on July 6, one person was removed from the Russia sanctions list, but it does not specify who exactly.

Mid-February 2022, shortly before the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Khasis announcement to leave the board of directors of Sberbank, “to be able to carry out his own projects”. The message from Sberbank stated that Khasis would continue to cooperate with the bank as a consultant and also lead Sberbank’s e-commerce holding company.

In March 2022, a month after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, Khasis fell under British sanctions along with Sberbank Chairman of the Board German Gref and First Deputy Chairman of the Bank’s Board of Directors. Alexander Vedyakhin.

In April of the same year, Vedomosti reported citing sources that Khasis left for the United States, according to various sources, either immediately after the start of the military operation in Ukraine or “a few days” before that. The interlocutor of the Sberbank publication said that the businessman left the country “one of the first among the top managers of Sberbank, which simply shocked the employees.” The organization also said that Khasis is not a full-time employee of the bank or any of its structures.

Khasis has been working at Sberbank since 2013. Previously, in different years he was Vice President of Alfa-Bank, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Perekrestok, General Director of X5 Retail Group, as well as Senior Vice President and executive director of new formats for the US Walmart network. Businessman moving from Walmart to Sberbank explain “perseverance” of German Gref, who, after two years of negotiations, managed to convince Khasis that he “would be interested in working at Sberbank”.
