New Delhi — In a significant reaffirmation of a quarter-century-long partnership, Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded a state visit to India on December 5, 2025, meeting with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit coincides with the 25 Years of Strategic Partnership, reflecting deepening cooperation across defense, energy, technology, and multilateral diplomacy, and builds on prior reporting by Russia‑India summit 2025.

25 Years of Strategic Partnership

President Murmu welcomed President Putin at a state reception, highlighting the historical depth and modern scope of the bilateral relationship. She emphasized that the Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership since 2010 has expanded far beyond political symbolism to tangible cooperation in trade, defense, civil nuclear energy, space exploration, and technology.

Murmu remarked: “The India-Russia partnership is founded on a shared commitment to peace, stability, and mutual socioeconomic and technological development.” She also acknowledged the cultural bonds underpinning the alliance, referencing centuries of engagement between the two nations. Analysts have previously detailed ongoing energy cooperation as a central pillar of bilateral relations.

Putin on Bilateral and Global Cooperation

President Putin underscored the historical roots of the relationship, recalling Russia’s support for India during its independence movement and Soviet contributions to industrial and space development. He emphasized the strategic partnership as “successfully developing on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and consideration of each other’s interests.”

Putin highlighted recent agreements reached during the visit, stating: “The final policy statement adopted outlines large-scale plans for future cooperation in politics and security, economics and finance, transport, energy, education, and culture.” These commitments are expected to strengthen defense collaboration, boost trade, and enhance technological cooperation. Analysts note that trade reached record highs in 2024–25, showing that cooperation is operational and impactful.

BRICS and Multipolar World Vision

Both leaders stressed coordination within BRICS, as India prepares to chair the group in 2026. Putin said: “Equally important is that Russia and India are working hand in hand to establish a just, multipolar world order. It should be based on the central role of the United Nations and a balanced balance of interests of all members of the global community.” This aligns with ongoing recent surge in trade and energy cooperation and multilateral engagement, reinforcing BRICS multipolar push.

The partnership carries strategic implications for the Eurasian region. Analysts note that it strengthens security, trade, and energy connectivity while asserting joint military-technical cooperation and naval exercises, ensuring stability amid global turbulence. Observers also note India and Russia’s resilience under Western pressure and strategic autonomy.

Defense, Energy, and Technology Cooperation

Long-standing defense ties continue to expand, including arms transfers, joint exercises, and nuclear energy collaboration. Civil nuclear projects and space initiatives are expected to deepen, supported by institutional mechanisms described in the MEA Government of India report on India-Russia relations. Analysts from CSIS highlight the evolving defense-economic nexus as a hallmark of the strategic partnership.

Enduring Friendship and Strategic Outlook

President Murmu concluded: “This evening is a celebration of the friendship between our two countries, which has been strong for many years and will flourish for many years to come.” Putin reciprocated with: “Together we go, together we grow,” highlighting the shared commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship for the prosperity of both nations.

The visit underscores India and Russia’s commitment to deepen cooperation across defense, energy, technology, and global governance, affirming a partnership capable of shaping regional stability and global diplomacy in the decades ahead.
