MUMBAI — A buyer who waited out the weekend paid for the patience. The gold rate today, Monday, August 24, 2026, is ₹16,397 a gram for 24 carat and ₹15,030 for 22 carat, up ₹88 and ₹80 respectively. On ten grams that is ₹1,63,970 and ₹1,50,300, a rise of ₹880 and ₹800 since Sunday.

The number that matters is the second one. Gold rate today 22K has gone through ₹15,000 a gram, and 22 carat is what almost every jewellery purchase in India is actually made of.

Gold Rate Today 22K: Through ₹15,000 a Gram

Sunday’s 22 carat rate was ₹14,950. Today’s is ₹15,030. The ₹15,000 line is not a market level and nothing technical happens when gold crosses it, but it is the number a jeweller quotes and the number a customer remembers, and until this morning the counter was sitting below it, frozen since Friday.

There is a second thing in that figure worth knowing. Divide today’s 24 carat rate by 24 and multiply by 22 and you get ₹15,030.08. The published 22 carat rate is ₹15,030. The tracker is not pricing 22 carat gold independently at all. It is computing it as exactly twenty-two twenty-fourths of the 24 carat number, to the rupee.

That is worth knowing because 18 carat does not behave the same way. Eighteen twenty-fourths of ₹16,397 is ₹12,297.75, and the published 18 carat rate is ₹12,293, about five rupees light. Two of the three purities are pure arithmetic off the third and one is not, on the same page, on the same morning.

Gold Price Today: MCX, COMEX and the International Quote

The retail counter is the last stop in a chain, and the rest of it moved first.

Spot gold is at its highest since May 15. The MCX percentage does not reconcile with the ₹1,62,440 Friday close reported elsewhere: +0.65 per cent off ₹1,63,870 implies a prior close nearer ₹1,62,812. Treat the futures move as approximate. Retail and futures are quoted on different bases and the ₹100 between them is not an anomaly.

Spot gold rose about 0.9 per cent. The Indian retail counter rose 0.54 per cent, ₹880 on Sunday’s ₹1,63,090. Those two numbers are not the same, and the difference is the part of the price that is not gold at all.

Gold Price Today and the Spread Silver Does Not Have

Look at the city table again. Delhi is ₹150 above the national rate on ten grams of 24 carat, Ahmedabad is ₹50 above, and the other seven cities are identical to the rupee.

Now put it beside the other metal on the same tracker. Silver is ₹2,60,000 a kilogram nationally and ₹2,75,000 in Hyderabad, Chennai and Kerala, a gap of ₹15,000, or 5.8 per cent. The southern silver premium is more than sixty times wider, proportionally, than the widest gap anywhere on the gold counter.

Same country, same day, same page, two metals. One is quoted as a single national number with rounding differences in two cities. The other has a regional split that has tripled inside a week. Our silver rate today coverage has been tracking that gap since Tuesday and still cannot get anyone to explain it.

What the Price Is Doing to Indian Demand

The rate going up is not the same thing as more gold being bought, and in India this year it has meant the opposite. The World Gold Council put global demand at 1,269 tonnes in the second quarter, flat against the same quarter last year, with the first half at 2,522 tonnes. That is a rise of two per cent in volume, and a record $380 billion in value.

Read those two figures together and the shape of the market is clear enough. The money going into gold hit a record. The metal going out barely moved. Indian demand specifically eased over the quarter, which the council attributes to elevated prices and policy measures.

So the household story behind a ₹880 morning is not a rush to buy. It is the same wedding, the same festival, and a lighter chain.

What Moved the Gold Price Today

A weaker dollar did most of it. Spot gold reached its highest level since May 15 as the currency softened, and traders are positioning ahead of two things this week: US inflation data, and the first Jackson Hole keynote by Kevin Warsh since he took over as Federal Reserve chair, due Friday.

The weekend accounts for the rest. MCX and the international market were both shut from Friday evening, the retail counter carried Friday’s number through Saturday and Sunday unchanged, and Monday is the first session in which anything could reprice. The ₹880 is three days of movement arriving at once, not a Monday rally.

What we still cannot size is the rupee. Spot gold rose 0.9 per cent and the Indian retail print rose 0.54 per cent, so something absorbed roughly a third of the move on the way in. The exchange rate is the obvious candidate, and import duty and tracker timing are the others, but the published rate folds all three into one figure and breaks out none of them. Two trackers could not even agree on this morning’s national 24K number, quoting ₹1,63,970 and ₹1,63,080, which is ₹890 of disagreement about a price that is supposed to be a single national fact.

The same morning’s oil prices today coverage runs alongside this one.
