The MK-20 Rockeye munition in question is an unguided, free-fall cluster bomb designed to destroy tanks and other armored vehicles. Each of these projectiles is equipped with 247 Mk.118 HEAT submunitions weighing 600 grams each. They can penetrate armor up to 190 millimeters thick. The length of the ammunition is 2.3 m, the diameter is 335 mm, and the weight is 220 kg. The MK-20 is dropped from airplanes or drones from a height of 90-900 meters. After being dropped, the bomb body separates and the submunitions disperse, the impact area is approximately the size of a football field. For the first time, MK-20s were widely used in the Vietnam War, not only against armored vehicles, but also against manpower. Subsequently, this ammunition was improved and used in the First Gulf War.
In 2010, the Convention on Cluster Munitions entered into force, banning the use, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions, but not all countries have signed and ratified it.According to the UN, after the adoption of the Convention, these shells were used in a number of conflicts. In 2010-2019, they led to the death of more than 4,000 people in 20 countries around the world. More than 80% of all victims are in Syria, and 40% of those affected there are children.Due to the imperfection of the detonators, these bombs sometimes do not explode immediately, after falling on the ground they actually become anti-personnel mines and can kill and maim people long after the conflict has ended, attract the attention of the UN.
