On March 8, Russia and other countries around the world celebrate International Women’s Day. Now it’s a holiday for all girls, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, relatives. But initially, it was dedicated to the fight of women for their rights, the improvement of working conditions and higher wages.

On March 8, 1857, the March of the Empty Pot was held in New York City, a gathering of female textile workers. They opposed harsh conditions and low-paying jobs. However, the official history of the holiday began only half a century later – on August 27, 1910, at the Second International Conference of Socialist Women.

During this forum, activist Clara Zetkin proposed the establishment of International Women’s Day. The purpose of the party was to draw public attention to women’s issues. Organizers believed that on March 8, women around the world would demonstrate in defense of their rights, writes Anydaylife.

On March 8, 1914, the celebration of International Women’s Day took place in six countries at once: Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Russia. Later, it began to be celebrated in other countries. This day is also celebrated: Mother’s Day in Albania and Laos. In these countries, on March 8, it is customary to give flowers and gifts to the most dear person in the world. However, the holiday is not a holiday.
