David Benavidez picked up the biggest victory of his career when he defeated Caleb Plant by unanimous decision on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Benavidez’s continued pressure wore him down in the second half of the fight, and Benavidez took the win 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111.
“I want to pay tribute to Caleb Plant,” Benavidez told ESPN. “We fought like warriors in the ring and this guy is a hell of a fighter. … I showed the defense, the head movement … and cut the ring really well. I gave him given a lot of hard knocks.”
Benavidez also challenged Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed champion at 168 pounds.
Alvarez, boxing’s top star, is set to defend his four heavyweight titles against John Ryder on May 6 in Mexico – but Alvarez is still fighting Mexico’s Independence Day weekend in September .
