The procedure for transferring Russian woman Sofia Sapega, sentenced in Belarus, to Russia has begun, TASS reports citing her lawyer Anton Gashinsky. The attorney declined to comment on when that might happen.
The Russian woman was sentenced in Belarus to six years under several criminal articles, including intentional incitement to social hatred and discord, which carried serious consequences. Sapega admitted that she was the editor-in-chief of the Black Book of Belarus Telegram channel, which published personal information about the republic’s internal affairs officers.
The Russian woman was arrested on May 23, 2001 at Minsk airport together with Roman Protasevich, the founder of the Nexta Telegram channel, recognized as an extremist in Belarus. At the beginning of 2023, it was learned that she had been refused a pardon. Then lawyer Gashinsky promised to file a request to transfer Sapieha to the Russian Federation, where she could ask the president not to serve the rest of her sentence.
