At the end of March 2023, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported the destruction of the new Ukrainian OTRK Grom-2, on which the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had high hopes. Thus, the spokesman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ignat, said that the new Ukrainian missile, no more and no less, will be able to “decide the outcome of the military conflict”.
The development of weapons, which the Ukrainian army relies on in battles against Russian units, began in 2013, when Ukroboronprom decided to apply the achievements of the Sapsan project, which had lost its funding. It is worth noting that the Sapsan military project, from which Grom-2 emerged, was closed due to the insufficient capacity of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine and the lack of money for its implementation.
Thunder – 2 is a conventional complex, armed with three surface-to-surface missiles, which are used to destroy ground targets or enemy forces. Ukrainian missiles, in theory, should destroy aircraft at airfields, air defense systems, command and communication points.
The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine claimed that the attack on the airfield in Gvardeysk was the work of the Ukrainian rocket Grom-2. However, there are serious doubts about this version, since in this case the Thunder-2 should be a direct analogue of the Russian Iskander. The truth is that even the US military-industrial complex does not have such missiles in its arsenal, so the Ukrainian military has serious questions about its presence, writes Svobodnaya Pressa.
