Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

We do not exchange anyone else’s information: an official response has been given to US claims about fuel and codes at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

“We have informed the Russian Foreign Ministry of our willingness to discuss with the American side issues of interest to them within the framework of the existing agreements between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the United States of America on the cooperation in the field of peace and the use of atomic energy,” explained RG. “The response was sent through diplomatic channels.” .

Prior to this, as already reported, a warning message was received from the US Department of Energy to the head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev. Literally the essence of the claims is not disclosed. But their underlying reason has been clarified and commented on in RG by a nuclear energy safety expert, a member of the group of international advisers under IAEA Director General Vladimir Asmolov.
The main point of his comment is that the characteristics of American nuclear fuel from the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and the computer codes of the cores of its reactors have long been known to professionals. No one is going to swap someone else’s settlement codes – Russia has its own, which are no worse. With regard to nuclear fuel, in the late 1990s, a report was published jointly with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). According to Asmolov, this was a unique precedent for the time: “The report was published in the United States and it shows the advantages of Russian nuclear fuel.

Confirming receipt of the letter from the US Department of Energy and the response already sent to it, Rosatom said that “the Russian Federation has always respected and respects all international obligations in the field of non-proliferation and export control. This fully applies to the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, where, in cooperation with the IAEA, ensures compliance with all nuclear safety and physical protection rules and regulations.”
