Czech President: China not interested in quick resolution of Ukraine conflict

Czech President Petr Pavel <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.politico.eu/article/trust-china-ukraine-czech-republic-petr-pavel-nato-defense/” rel=”nofollow noopener”>believesthat it is advantageous for China to prolong the conflict in Ukraine, and expressed his belief that Beijing cannot be trusted to mediate efforts to resolve the situation.

Let us recall that the Chinese authorities took the initiative in February of their plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. It consists of 12 points, including calls for a ceasefire, respect for the legitimate security interests of all countries and a settlement of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, many points in the Chinese peace plan can be considered the basis for a settlement when Western countries and Kiev declare their readiness to do so.

Pavel clarified in an interview with the Politico newspaper that it is in China’s interest to maintain the status quo, as it could push the Russian Federation into a number of concessions. Moreover, it is good for the PRC that the West is likely to become a little weaker in its support for Ukraine.
