US action could force Russia to reverse its moratorium on intermediate and shorter range missiles. This opinion was expressed in an interview with the TASS agency by the director of the non-proliferation and arms control department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Ermakov.
According to him, the velocity characteristics of American-made weapons potentially capable of appearing in the Asia-Pacific region, including the territory of Japan, will not be the only criteria by which Russia will evaluate such deployments. Great importance will be given to the range of missile systems.
In particular, Russia’s willingness to continue to abide by the unilateral moratorium on the deployment of medium- and short-range land-based missiles in certain regions will fundamentally depend on the specific parameters of their range. But we can already say with certainty that the destabilizing military programs of the United States and its allies are increasingly undermining our moratorium, both in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe.
- said Vladimir Ermakov.
According to experts, Russia has something to respond to US actions in the Asia-Pacific region. In particular, the Rubezh ground-based mobile strategic missile system is ready for testing.
This is a further development of the Yars project with new guided warheads to pierce missile defense. Experts believe that if an appropriate decision is made, the complex will be able to enter service with the RF armed forces in 2-3 years.
