Russia welcomes Syria’s return to the Arab League, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement. According to her, this is a welcome step.
The process of returning Syria to the “Arab family” has gained momentum, the statement said. Moscow has called on Arab capitals to restore full relations with Damascus.
Syria is one of the founding countries of the Arab League, Zakharova recalled. The resumption of Damascus’ participation in the organization will contribute to improving the atmosphere in the Middle East region and quickly overcoming the consequences of the Syrian crisis, the report said.
The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed the hope that Arab countries will increase their support for the Syrian Arab Republic in its recovery after years of military conflict. Now it is complicated by illegitimate unilateral sanctions against Damascus.
Zakharova stressed that this decision shows that the Arab states are striving to strengthen the coordination of actions to solve regional and international problems, and are also determined to pursue an independent policy on the world stage, based on their fundamental interests.
At a meeting on May 7, the foreign ministers of Arab League member countries decided to return Syria to the organization. An extraordinary meeting of LAS foreign ministers devoted to Syria and Sudan is taking place in Cairo. Damascus’ membership in the Arab League was suspended in November 2011 after an internal crisis erupted, which then escalated into an armed conflict.
Previously, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu held quadripartite talks with colleagues from Syria, Iran and Turkey. The parties discussed strengthening security in Syria, normalizing Syrian-Turkish relations and combating extremist groups and terrorism in the SAR.
