In honor of the 78th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, official events and commemorative processions are held in different countries. How Victory Day is celebrated abroad – in the material and photo report of Russian media.

In recent days, actions of the Immortal Regiment have taken place in different cities around the world. Rallies and marches took place in particular in Rome, Paris, Madrid, Beijing, Oulan Bator, Buenos Aires, Caracas. The action also took place in TĂĽrkiye. Russians living in the country went to the “Immortal Regiment” in Antalya, Alanya, Ankara, Izmir and Istanbul, transmits Msk1 website. More than 100 people accepted participation in the “Immortal Regiment” action in Tunisian Hammamet.

“Immortal Regiment” in the post-Soviet space

May 9 “Immortal Regiment” takes place in post-Soviet countries. In Kyrgyzstan, the action took place in Bishkek and other cities. In the city of Osh, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Zhaparov took part in the procession, transmits 24.kg. In Yerevan, members of the “Immortal Regiment” carry the flags of Armenia, they also unrolled the St. George ribbon, transmits News.am. Leading the procession are representatives of the Armenian Apostolic Church, informed RIA News.

In Chisinau, the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova organized the Victory March and the procession of the Immortal Regiment, informed Noi.md. Participants in the action carried portraits of participants of the Great Patriotic War, Moldovan and red flags. Some wore St. George’s ribbons, although in April 2022 Moldova passed a law banning the display of St. George’s ribbons in public places.

In turn, the leaders of Moldova – President Maia Sandu, Speaker of Parliament and Prime Minister – laid flowers at the monument to the “Grieving Mother” at the “Eternity” Memorial.

In Kyiv, Odessa and Poltava, people laid flowers in memorable places, reports Strana.ua. Residents of the Ukrainian capital, in particular, brought flowers to the Eternal Flame in the Park of Glory. People laid flowers on their own initiative. The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on celebrating Europe Day on May 9 instead of Victory Day.

In Kazakhstan, the head of the presidential administration, Olzhas Bektenov, laid flowers at the monument to Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, a member of the Panfilov division.

“Olzhas Bektenov laid flowers at the monument to the great son of the Kazakh people Bauyrzhan Momyshuly and honored the memory of Kazakh soldiers who died on the war fronts”, reported press service of the presidential administration.

This year, the authorities of Kazakhstan have decided, for reasons of economy, not to organize a military parade in honor of the Day of Victory and the Defender of the Fatherland (celebrated on May 7). The country’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attended the victory parade in Moscow.

Meanwhile, in Latvia, police arrested six people, according to Delfi. Five people were arrested as they laid flowers at the site of a monument to Soviet soldiers in Riga, demolished last year, another as they laid flowers at the Freedom Monument.

Nine administrative cases and one criminal case were initiated in connection with the celebration of Victory Day. All of the cases involve the use of symbols “glorifying military aggression and war crimes,” Delfi notes. Police are also conducting preventative conversations with residents. For example, law enforcement officers in Daugavpils asked a man in a wheelchair to take off his jacket with the inscription “Russia”.

Remembrance actions abroad

Russian diplomats from different countries laid flowers on May 9. In Tokyo, embassy staff brought flowers to the grave of Soviet intelligence officer Richard Sorge, in Berlin – in memory of fallen Soviet soldiers was held on the 78th anniversary of Victory in Treptow Park and Tiergarten. The events were followed by diplomats from other countries. Meanwhile, at a memorial cemetery in Warsaw, protesters prevented Russian Ambassador Sergei Andreev from laying memorial wreaths.

In Israel, during a solemn ceremony organized by the town hall of the city of Bat Yam (south of Tel Aviv), they honored the memory of those who died during the Second World War. The mayor personally laid a wreath in front of the monument. Addressing veterans, he noted that the people of Israel do not for a moment forget the great sacrifice the Red Army suffered in the victory over Nazism: “In these days, we must remember that we are all here thanks to the courage of the Soviet soldiers. “, transmits RIA News”.

In Cyprus, the action “The Fire of Memory” took place, timed to coincide with Victory Day, informed CASS. In Larnaca, actress Yana Poplavskaya and Channel One host Alexander Smol presented a particle of the Eternal Flame from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that arrived from Moscow to members of the Coordinating Council of Russian compatriots.
