EU authorities are considering a proposal to suspend the transportation of oil through the Druzhba pipeline to European countries. First, they plan to deprive Poland and Germany of raw materials from the pipeline. The Bloomberg news agency writes about it.
As an exception, the EU will allow supplies via the southern branch of Druzhba, which supplies Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The proposal to stop oil pumping through the pipeline was made during the discussion of the 11th package of anti-Russian sanctions. Its adoption is currently difficult due to disagreements within the European Union.
Currently, according to Bloomberg, only a small amount of Kazakh oil is pumped through the Druzhba pipeline, but Russia receives revenue only from the transit of raw materials through its territory. However, the agency notes that some EU countries may not approve of the decision to shut down Friendship altogether.
The ban on oil supply through the Druzhba pipeline to Germany will affect the operation of one of the oil refineries in the east of the country. PS Schwedt, near Berlin, is already forced to look for alternative suppliers of raw materials, but for now it has reduced its fuel production. Hungary is categorically opposed to stopping oil transit through the pipeline.
The proposal to stop pumping through the pipeline will be part of the 11th EU sanctions package after the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. This will require the support of all member states and could change before that happens as negotiations continue.
