In the US, scientists are studying the phenomenon of brain activity of patients on the verge of death

May 18, 2023

American scientists have found that people who almost died experience near-death experiences that affect the functioning of the brain. The researchers decided to study them.

In the course of scientific work, it was proved that the brain activity of some dying people begins to increase dramatically. Often, patients describe their near-death state as hovering over their own body, as well as life, which flashes before their eyes like a movie in a continuous tape.

So far, science is not clear about the cause of near-death experiences. But there are suggestions that they appear due to a lack of oxygen, an excess of carbon dioxide, as well as the effects of drugs and hallucinations.

“No single physiological or psychological model explains all the common features of near-death experiences,” said psychiatrist Mikhail Kashtanov.

As part of practical experience, researchers were able to find out that within a few seconds after a cardiac arrest, increased gamma activity is recorded in the posterior region of the brain. Such a phenomenon suggested to scientists that at the time of death, a hidden consciousness is activated inside a person, and gamma waves indicate that different areas of the brain work together, combining different sensations when consciously perceiving an object, writes MedikForum .
