NEW YORK — Taylor Swift walked into Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night wearing an orange and blue T-shirt that read “Stevie Knicks” — a pun that, within hours, was everywhere — and stayed to watch the most improbable game in the history of the NBA Finals.

The shirt, designed by Alana Haim and made for the extended crew, combined Stevie Nicks — the Fleetwood Mac singer and rock icon — with the New York Knicks. Swift wore it alongside Alana and Este Haim. Mariska Hargitay arrived later to find one waiting for her too. By the time the Knicks won, the shirt had become its own news story, a piece of vernacular celebrity fashion that distilled the night’s absurd energy into a single garment.

The energy, to put it simply, was earned. The New York Knicks entered the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs down 29 points. What followed was the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. Jalen Brunson’s clutch floater gave the Knicks their first lead of the night with 1:47 remaining. The Spurs reclaimed a one-point edge on Stephon Castle free throws. Then OG Anunoby, with just over one second left, scored the game-winning basket. Final score: Knicks 107, Spurs 106. The Garden had no more volume left to give.

Charles Barkley, covering the game for TNT, offered the night’s most memorable analysis. “When you blow a 29-point lead,” he said, “the other team has to help you.”

The celebrity attendance matched the occasion. Spike Lee was courtside, as he has been for Knicks games spanning decades. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David were there. Adam Sandler, born in Brooklyn, watched from the seats he grew up dreaming of. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, John McEnroe, and Timothée Chalamet rounded out a crowd that looked less like a sporting event and more like a table read for a major film. Variety reported the full celebrity roll call after the game.

Mariska Hargitay, who arrived directly from a double performance at the Hudson Theatre, ran onto the court after the final buzzer to embrace Anunoby. She later gave a statement: “I feel so lucky, so honored, so grateful, that in the future when people talk about that game, which they will forever and ever, I get to say I was there.”

Swift’s presence at the game was itself a logistical statement. She had spent Tuesday evening at the premiere of Toy Story 5 in Los Angeles, where she contributed an original song titled “I Knew It, I Knew You” to the film’s soundtrack. She flew across the country to be at MSG for Game 4, arriving in time for tip-off. It was the kind of week that tends to happen when you recently doubled your net worth to $2 billion and can charter what you need. Variety documented her Game 4 arrival.

The Knicks now lead the series 3-1. Game 5 is scheduled for Saturday night in San Antonio, with New York one win from its first NBA Championship since 1973. The Spurs will play at home in the AT&T Center, trying to extend the series and return to MSG for Game 6. Whether Swift makes the trip to Texas is not yet known. The shirt stays in New York.

What Game 4 at Madison Square Garden represented was something that happens at that building every decade or so: an occasion when a sports event becomes a cultural event, when the city’s creative and entertainment class shows up together in the same room at the same hour and watches something that nobody expected to see. The Garden has always functioned as a kind of civic auditorium for the American imagination. Wednesday night reminded everyone why.
