BTS stood at the center of the 2026 American Music Awards on May 25, accepting Artist of the Year for the second time in their career — and the first since the mandatory South Korean military service that kept the group’s seven members off global stages for the better part of three years. The ceremony, hosted by Queen Latifah at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+, marked a formal homecoming: BTS made their US television performance debut at the AMAs in 2017, and the 2026 ceremony, nine years later, gave them the night’s top prize.

The group swept their three nominations. In addition to Artist of the Year, they took Song of the Summer for “Swim” and Best Male K-Pop Artist, bringing their all-time AMA trophy count to 11. The trajectory runs from a fan-voted group that first turned American audiences’ heads through late-night television bookings and arena tours, through a hiatus imposed by South Korean law, and back to Las Vegas where the most popular act on the planet collected another armful of hardware. Their performance, pre-taped from their Las Vegas residency, landed in the broadcast as a reminder of exactly what the stage looked like when all seven — Jungkook, Jin, Jimin, RM, J-Hope, V, and Suga — were in it together.

The night also served as a coming-out moment for KATSEYE, the multinational K-pop group assembled through a Netflix reality competition in partnership with HYBE — BTS’s label — who took home three awards: New Artist of the Year, Best Music Video for “Gnarly,” and Breakthrough Pop Artist. The lineage is not subtle: the group that blazed the trail for Korean pop acts in American award spaces now shares a label home with the act poised to carry that work forward. Variety’s complete 2026 AMAs winners list captured the full scope of the HYBE imprint on the evening.

In the rock and alternative lane, Sombr claimed three wins: Breakthrough Rock/Alternative Artist, Best Rock/Alternative Song for “Back to Friends,” and Best Rock/Alternative Album for I Barely Know Her. The group’s sweep, alongside BTS’s and KATSEYE’s hauls, underscored a ceremony where the biggest nights went to acts with deeply committed fanbases who vote in organized waves. The soundtrack to KPop Demon Hunters — led by its track “Golden” — also won Song of the Year, Best Vocal Performance, and Best Pop Song, making the show the most animated advertisement for the animated film’s music the studio could have hoped for.

The night’s most discussed outcome was Taylor Swift’s shutout. She entered with eight nominations — the most of any artist in the field — and won none of them, a result that immediately circulated as the kind of fan-voting anomaly the AMAs are prone to producing. Her all-time record of 40 AMA wins was not extended. Deadline’s preview of BTS’s AMA appearance had flagged the competitive dynamics ahead of the broadcast. The outcome will add a footnote to her 2026: this was also the week she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York, with Steven Spielberg comparing her to Lennon and McCartney at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony. Awards seasons give and they take.

Special honors went to Billy Idol, who received a lifetime achievement award and closed the show with a medley, Darius Rucker for the Veterans Voice Award, and Karol G for the International Artist Award of Excellence. Queen Latifah’s hosting drew early notices for its ease with the room; the AMAs have rotated through celebrities and comedians as hosts and Latifah, a Grammy and Academy Award nominee herself, anchored a long broadcast without visible strain. The Hollywood Reporter’s 2026 AMAs recap covered all the night’s performances across country, Latin, rock, and pop.

The timing adds another layer. BTS won Artist of the Year in Las Vegas on May 25. On July 19, they headline the FIFA World Cup Final halftime show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, alongside Madonna and Shakira — the first halftime show in the tournament’s history. Katy Perry headlined the World Cup opening ceremony at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on June 12; BTS will close it in New Jersey seven weeks later. From the AMAs in Las Vegas to the World Cup Final at MetLife, in a summer where the BET Awards and the Knicks Championship parade are reshaping June and July across American entertainment, BTS are the act that keeps showing up at the center of the biggest rooms.
