David Beckham received the 2,849th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, June 12, becoming the first footballer in the honor’s 67-year history to be inducted in the Sports Entertainment category — with longtime friend Tom Cruise delivering remarks and wife Victoria Beckham speaking at a ceremony that doubled as an unofficial curtain-raiser for the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening in Los Angeles the same day.

Cruise, who advised Beckham on his landmark 2007 move to Los Angeles Galaxy and has remained a close friend ever since, paid tribute to Beckham’s legendary 1996 halfway-line goal against Wimbledon for Manchester United. “The ball was in the air for just 3.5 seconds,” Cruise told the crowd at 6819 Hollywood Boulevard. “But that moment has now lived for three decades in the minds of everyone who saw it and in the history of sport.” Cruise also invoked Beckham’s iconic curling free kick for England at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Beckham responded in kind: “You welcomed us to L.A. 20 years ago, and you have been a loyal friend and an inspiration to me ever since.”

Victoria Beckham — who joked at the podium that she had assumed the ceremony was for her (“I thought I was getting my star on the Walk of Fame for Spice World… earning a star takes a little more than surviving the late ’90s box office”) — was joined by three of the couple’s children, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper. A visibly emotional Beckham told the gathering: “I actually can’t believe it. I remember walking in Hollywood and looking for the stars, and all these years later, knowing that I’ll have my own star, it’s a huge honor.” Variety’s profile of Beckham on the occasion of his Hollywood Walk of Fame honor sees him reflect on the milestone as part of a year that also brought a knighthood from the King of England and the distinction of becoming the U.K.’s first billionaire sportsman.

Beckham described the Cruise tribute as a “full circle moment.” His first date with Victoria was at the cinema to see Cruise in Jerry Maguire — and here was Cruise, nearly three decades later, honoring him on Hollywood Boulevard. Speaking to reporters, Beckham invoked the phrase that has defined his two decades in the United States: “I am living the American dream.” The ceremony unfolded just hours before the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening at SoFi Stadium, where Katy Perry, Lisa, Anitta, and Future performed before the United States’ opening match against Paraguay. Beckham and Victoria attended both events on the same afternoon.

The day drew a wider constellation of celebrities to Los Angeles. Paris Hilton, Rob Lowe, and Josh Peck were among those documented in Deadline’s FIFA World Cup 2026 L.A. red carpet and performance gallery.

The Beckham family’s Hollywood ties run through the same celebrity circle that has defined Los Angeles this week. Tom Cruise marked his own summer milestone just days earlier, attending a preview of Spielberg’s Disclosure Day — which opened this weekend to $44 million domestically. And Katy Perry, who performed at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony that Beckham also attended, debuted as a couple with Justin Trudeau at the Tribeca Film Festival the week prior.
