Jennifer Lopez Says She’d Have Slept With Every Star of 1993’s True Romance

Jennifer Lopez has named her favourite movie of the 1990s, and the answer is not what the publicists would have written for her. On the latest episode of Brett Goldstein’s Films to Be Buried With podcast, recorded this week and released June 13, the 56-year-old actor said the Quentin Tarantino-scripted True Romance was her “most arousing” film — then volunteered, unprompted, that she would have happily slept with every name in the credits.

“I would have had sex with any one of them,” Lopez told Goldstein, mid-laugh, after she had named True Romance as the film she rewatches most often when nobody is asking. “That is the truth. Which says a lot about me. But maybe, like, the dark side of me.”

The 1993 crime romance, directed by Tony Scott from Tarantino’s first sold screenplay, was a notorious near-miss at the box office that turned over the next two decades into one of the most-quoted cult films of its generation. The cast Lopez was referring to is the kind of list that sounds invented in retrospect. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette led; the supporting ensemble ran through Val Kilmer as the imagined ghost of Elvis Presley, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman as a pimp named Drexl, Brad Pitt as a stoner on a couch, James Gandolfini as a hitman, Bronson Pinchot, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn and a not-yet-Pulp-Fiction Samuel L. Jackson.

What makes the quote land is the math underneath. Lopez was 24 when True Romance opened in September 1993. She was, that same year, a backup dancer on Janet Jackson’s janet. Tour and a Fly Girl on In Living Color. She was a Bronx-born performer on the very edge of her break-out into Selena, Anaconda and Out of Sight — a few years away, in other words, from being on the receiving end of the same kind of unsolicited celebrity confessions she has now decided to deliver herself, on a podcast, at 56.

According to AOL Entertainment’s account of the episode, Goldstein took the answer in stride. The Ted Lasso and Shrinking actor has spent the better part of a decade running Films to Be Buried With as the celebrity-interview podcast that asks guests to imagine their funerals, then talks them through the films of their lives — the kind of structure that produces the occasional revelation a press junket never would. Lopez’s answer became the headline within hours.

The professional context for the comment is its own quiet plot. Lopez has a new film, the Mike Schur-produced romantic comedy Office Romance, out in August. The podcast circuit she sat for this week — Goldstein on Monday, Las Culturistas on Tuesday, a Letterboxd guest spot on Wednesday — has not been the usual battery of fluff. Yahoo Entertainment’s run-down of the same episode flagged it as the most candid Lopez has been in interview form since her 2024 Ben Affleck divorce, when most of her press answers were defensive by default.

True Romance itself has been having a year. The Criterion 4K restoration arrived in March and pulled the same kind of legacy-cast nostalgia coverage the Toy Story 5 cycle has produced. Gary Oldman recently told Empire that the Drexl dreadlocks are the role most often quoted back to him at airports. Patricia Arquette has been doing her own podcast tour for the restoration. The film, in the time since Lopez first watched it as a 24-year-old, has become its own institution.

The comment is also, in the wider 2026 press environment, the kind of thing that could not have been engineered. Press tours are now heavily scripted by social-media teams who track every quote in real time. Lopez clearly knew this answer would clip. She delivered it anyway, with the tone of someone who has decided that being too careful at 56 is its own form of self-erasure. The Olsen twins marked their 40th birthday in total silence. Joan Cusack returned to a Hollywood premiere for the first time in 11 years and used the moment to argue, gently, for going home to Chicago. Lopez, the same week, went on a podcast and named everybody in True Romance.

Office Romance hits theatres August 21. The Films to Be Buried With episode is streaming now on the major podcast platforms. Lopez has not commented further on the True Romance line, and the press representatives for Pitt, Walken and Oldman were not asked for comment by Sunday morning, because there is essentially no professional way for any of them to respond to it that would not generate a second news cycle. The comment, like the film, is now its own object — something that exists in the cultural record because Lopez decided, while talking about Tony Scott, that she did not feel like editing herself.
