Tamil actor, director, and choreographer Raghava Lawrence has signalled his intention to enter active politics, releasing an 18-minute video on June 12 asking fans to decide whether he should take the step. “Do your duty sincerely, without expecting anything in return,” Lawrence wrote on X alongside the video. “If you say ‘No,’ I will not enter politics and will continue my selfless service to society. But if you say ‘Yes,’ I am ready to enter.”

The announcement has intensified speculation that Lawrence could contest the Trichy East Assembly constituency on a Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam ticket. The seat fell vacant after Chief Minister Vijay, who won both Trichy East and Perambur in the recent elections, chose to retain the Perambur seat for its proximity to the state secretariat and resigned from Trichy East. Vijay had defeated DMK candidate Inigo Irudayaraj by 27,416 votes in the constituency.

Lawrence met a large group of fans and supporters at his residence in Uthandi, Chennai on June 14 to discuss his proposed political journey. He told them that the current political and social situation in Tamil Nadu had prompted him to consider entering public life, and that his intention was to work for the welfare of people. He praised the ruling TVK government’s administration, welcomed the closure of TASMAC liquor outlets, and commended the School Education Department’s performance under the new dispensation.

The actor, who was born Raghava in a low-income family in Chennai, adopted the stage name Raghava Lawrence in 2001 after building his career as a dancer and choreographer. His break came when superstar Rajinikanth was impressed by his dance talent and gave him his first opportunity behind the camera. Lawrence went on to create the Muni and Kanchana horror-comedy franchises, which became among the most commercially successful series in Tamil cinema history. The original Muni in 2007 established his signature blend of slapstick comedy and supernatural horror, and the franchise expanded through Kanchana in 2011, Kanchana 2 in 2015, and Kanchana 3 in 2019. He also made his Bollywood directorial debut with Laxmii in 2020, a Hindi remake of Kanchana starring Akshay Kumar.

Lawrence’s relationship with Vijay predates the latter’s political career. The two worked together on the 2003 film Thirumalai, and Lawrence has maintained a visible friendship with the actor-turned-Chief Minister over two decades. His praise for the TVK government and the timing of his announcement, coming just as the Trichy East bypoll approaches, have led political commentators to speculate that his candidacy may already have informal backing from the party leadership.

The actor’s philanthropic work has been a consistent part of his public identity. He has run charitable programmes for underprivileged communities in Tamil Nadu for years, a track record he referenced in his video as evidence that his interest in public service is not a sudden calculation. “I will soon announce my political journey,” he told fans at the Uthandi meeting. “I will share important details related to it with my fans in the coming days.”

Lawrence’s potential move follows a long tradition of Tamil cinema figures entering politics. M.G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa, Vijay himself, and Kamal Haasan all made the transition from screen to legislature, with varying degrees of success. Rajinikanth famously flirted with a political career for years before stepping back. Lawrence’s case is distinct in that he comes from the horror-comedy genre rather than the mass-hero mould that typically feeds Tamil political careers, and his fan base, while devoted, is built on a different kind of screen persona than the messianic roles that typically launch political careers in the state.

Whether Lawrence formally joins TVK or announces an independent path is expected to become clear in the coming weeks. The Trichy East bypoll date has not yet been announced by the Election Commission of India, but the seat’s vacancy and the volume of speculation around Lawrence’s candidacy suggest the campaign is already underway in all but name.
