MANCHESTER — Phil Foden will remain at the only professional club he has ever known. Manchester City announced Tuesday that the 26-year-old midfielder has signed a four-year contract extension keeping him at the Etihad until 2030, with a further option year that could extend the deal through 2031. The negotiations, according to Goal.com citing The Athletic, were led by Rafaela Pimenta, the super agent who also represents Erling Haaland.
That detail carries weight. Pimenta does not take on clients as a favor. Her involvement signals how seriously City, now in transition for the first time in a decade, valued securing Foden as the base case for what comes next.
The arithmetic of what was at stake: Foden’s existing deal was due to expire in June 2027. Without this extension, City would have entered the summer with their best player in the final year of his contract. The window that closed Tuesday had attracted reported interest from Galatasaray and informal approaches from Barcelona and Bayern Munich during the months his starting position grew uncertain.
He did not leave. The National reported Foden’s statement: “It’s an unbelievable feeling. Obviously, being here since a young age, coming through the full academy into the first team, it’s always been a dream of mine to play for City.” He joined the academy from Stockport at nine. He has played no other professional football. At 26, he now will not before he is 30 at a minimum.
His career numbers at City stand at 369 appearances, 110 goals, and 68 assists, across 20 major trophies: six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, and a FIFA Club World Cup. He won PFA Player of the Year. He is, alongside Bernardo Silva and John Stones, the joint-most decorated player in the club’s history. None of that stopped the uncertainty of the past twelve months from becoming a story of its own.
The 2025-26 season left questions. Foden started only two Premier League matches after March, a period in which his place in the starting lineup was taken by others. He was substituted before the hour mark in the FA Cup final. Whether the dip belonged to form, to fit, or to a system that had stopped suiting him was never publicly resolved. The contract does not resolve it either.
Foden’s enthusiasm for what comes next was specific about the source. Maresca worked alongside him during the 2022-23 treble campaign as Guardiola’s assistant before leaving to manage Chelsea and then Leicester City. “I can’t wait to work with Enzo again,” Foden said. “He was brilliant during the treble season, someone all the players respected and loved working with.” His comments about the incoming manager carried credibility that standard welcome-to-the-club statements rarely do, because the two men already have a working history.
The transfer market context on the day of the announcement underscored how City chose to construct this summer. Chelsea spent £117 million on Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on Tuesday, a British record that confirmed how aggressively other clubs are reconfiguring in a compressed transfer window. City’s move was different: anchor the transition around what already exists.
Director of football Hugo Viana described Foden as “a unique talent” whose “creativity is a joy to watch,” adding that “at 26, his development is still ongoing.” The final clause does not close the assessment it opens. Whether it means the new regime sees more in Foden than the final months of Guardiola’s tenure suggested, or simply that young elite players are never fully finished products, is what pre-season will establish.
England’s World Cup run, in which Foden played a supporting role rather than a leading one through the knockout stages, ran parallel to his difficult second half at club level. Two separate competitions, same pattern. Maresca’s first task with Foden is not persuading him to stay; Tuesday settled that. It is persuading the question marks from the last twelve months to stop following the player into the next one.
What City announced Tuesday is the most basic form of commitment: Foden stays through the first Maresca cycle. Whether that cycle involves the player at the center of the attack or rotating into it is the thing nobody in the announcement confirmed. What Pimenta negotiated, and what Foden signed, ensures the question is asked at the Etihad rather than somewhere else.
