Quordle hands you nine guesses for four boards, and today two of those boards are built from almost the same letters. That reads like a gift on the way in. It is not.

Board one is what a priest does, and what you say after a sneeze.

PORCH and CHOSE Share Three Letters and No Positions

This is the day’s real trick. PORCH and CHOSE have C, H and O in common, three of five letters, and not one of them sits in the same square twice.

In PORCH the O is second, the C is fourth and the H is fifth. In CHOSE the C is first, the H is second and the O is third. Every shared letter has moved. So a solver who cracks one board and carries the knowledge across gets three yellow tiles and zero green ones, which is the most frustrating result Quordle can hand you: you know the letters are there and you have learned nothing about where.

The useful move is to treat the second board as a fresh puzzle that happens to have a head start on its alphabet, rather than as a near-anagram of the one you just solved.

SLATE Comes Back Completely Blank on One Board

We ran the common openers against all four words, and the spread is lopsided.

SLATE does real work on three of them. It greens the L in BLESS and turns up the S and the E as well. It finds the L and the E in FELON. It greens the E in CHOSE and flags the S. Then it hits PORCH and returns nothing at all, because PORCH holds none of S, L, A, T or E.

CRANE is the better opener today for exactly that reason. It catches the C and the R in PORCH, the E in FELON and the C and E in CHOSE, and it is the only common starter that touches all four boards.

That matters more in Quordle than in Wordle. A blank board on guess one is not a small loss when you have nine guesses covering four words, because the board you learned nothing about is the board that will still be open when you are down to your last two.

The Doubled S Is the Other Trap

BLESS is the only word today that repeats a letter, and the repeat sits at the end where solvers stop looking. The complication is CHOSE, which also contains an S. A solver who has already confirmed a single S from CHOSE will carry that across and hold B, L, E and one S, and BLESS needs two.

BLEST is a real word and it will occur to people. So will BLESS itself, eventually. The point is that the S you found on another board tells you the letter exists and nothing about how many.

Where the Nine Guesses Go

Open on CRANE rather than SLATE, because it is the only common starter that scores on all four. Take FELON early: it is the least entangled of the four and it shares no awkward structure with the others. Leave PORCH and CHOSE until you can spend a guess on positions rather than letters, since you already know their alphabet.

What we cannot tell you is which board is which for you. Quordle’s four words are the same for everybody on a given day, but the order they resolve in depends entirely on what you type, so the numbering above is ours for convenience rather than the game’s.

Yesterday’s Quordle answers solved #1673, where the problem was the opposite one: two boards hid behind a J and a V that no standard opener contains at all.
