Makoto Daito is the playable protagonist of Stranger Than Heaven, the action-adventure game from RGG Studio. New hands-on coverage published October 21 puts his search for belonging at the center of a story that follows him across half a century, bringing together violent struggles and the world of show business.
Yu Shirota portrays Daito. A SEGA character profile published September 23 already identified the actor and protagonist, so this is not a newly announced identity. The latest coverage instead offers more context for the man players will control from 1915 to 1965.
Daito’s journey begins in San Francisco in 1915. Orphaned and persecuted because of his mixed American and Japanese heritage, he sneaks aboard a ship bound for Japan in search of somewhere to belong. The official Act 1: Kokura trailer follows that departure and his arrival in the country where he hopes to build another life.
RGG Studio is the developer behind Like a Dragon. Here, the character’s identity provides the thread connecting different periods of his life: the question is not simply whom Daito fights, but how an outsider finds a place in a changing society. The studio’s official description frames the wider game as a fifty-year struggle to find a home.

The game’s wider announcement and release plans featured in our Summer Game Fest 2026 coverage. The current reporting shifts attention from that announcement to Daito himself, separating the fictional character, Shirota’s performance and the gameplay impressions being reported before launch.
SEGA’s release announcement lists January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam and Xbox on PC. It also announces launch availability through Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Those are announced distribution plans, not evidence that the game is available to play today.
