Frankfurt / Main » The Ironman EM of the triathletes in Frankfurt will not take place on June 28th due to the corona crisis.
The top event in the Hessian metropolis was postponed indefinitely on Monday, as were 13 other competitions planned for June in Europe and South Africa – including the German races in Kraichgau and Hamburg.
The EM organizers are now considering the possibility of later hosting the traditional race over 3.8 kilometers swimming, 180 kilometers cycling and the marathon over 42.195 kilometers. The alternative date is September 27th.
However, the late date would collide with the World Cup in Hawaii on October 10th and would therefore probably mean that the event would have to take place without professionals. Two starts within two weeks are excluded for the athletes due to the physical strain.
Last year’s winner and world champion Jan Frodeno had already announced, like World Cup runner-up Sebastian Kienle, not coming to Frankfurt this year. The German top duo, like women’s world champion Anne Haug, instead wanted to start at the Ironman in Roth in early July but had already been canceled at the end of March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
