The Democrats determine Trump’s challenger

The race is clear on the other hand republican . As controversial as Trump was four years ago as an applicant, the party is now behind him. The President submitted the documents for a new candidacy to the election commission just five hours after he was sworn in in January 2017 – as early as no incumbent. The former Massachusetts governor had also applied William Weld and the former congressman Joe Walsh from Illinois. Both are no longer politically active and are gross outsiders. The Republican primary was canceled in several member states, which the challengers described as undemocratic. Both Walsh and Weld have since given up the race. Trump mathematically secured the nomination on March 17.

Significant Third-party candidacies are not emerging. Since the emergence of the modern two-party system in the United States, such have been hopeless, but they can always influence the outcome of the general election. In 1992, many Republicans complained that the independence of Ross Perot, President George Bush, cost re-election. Without Ralph Nader’s candidacy for the Green Party, Democrat Al Gore would probably have won the state of Florida in 2000 and thus the presidential election against George W. Bush.

A key issue for the Democrats is expensive healthcare after the Republican majority in Congress eroded the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are campaigning primarily with the buzzword “Medicare for All”. In doing so, they are promoting an expansion of the existing state health insurance for pensioners and the disabled (Medicare) to all Americans, i.e. a tax-financed unit fund excluding private providers. The other favorites, on the other hand, advocate a state fund in addition to the existing system, especially for those that private providers cannot afford. Such a “public option” had failed under Obama. The fact that the moderate applicants are now advocating for a state fund illustrates the Democrats’ shift to the left.

The party is equally controversial about the Green New Deal discussed a resolution on the fight against climate change, which was primarily propagated by the up-and-coming New York MP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This provides for a national investment program that is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030 with some radical reforms. The name of the program alludes to Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Like this, the Green New Deal also provides for extensive social programs to guarantee “economic security” through a job guarantee for all Americans or access to affordable accommodation. Despite the exorbitant costs, all promising Democratic candidates support the plan.

There is also great agreement in the Tax policy , almost all applicants want to withdraw Donald Trump’s reform from the end of 2017, so increase taxes. According to the Democrats, Trump’s measures unilaterally favor entrepreneurs and high earners. The two left-wing exponents Sanders and Warren, but also Buttigieg also want a wealth tax for the wealthiest percent of the population.
