Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The Democrats determine Trump’s challenger

Despite the corona pandemic, voters in Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 7, voted to vote for Democrats against Republican President Donald Trump. Governor Tony Evers ordered a move last minute due to health threats on Monday, but a court reversed his order. Local media reported that many polling stations remained closed due to the lack of election workers. In the city of Milwaukee, only five out of 180 were open, the newspaper “Milwaukee Journal Sentinel” reported. According to the report, the waiting times were sometimes two and a half hours. Many citizens in Wisconsin had previously voted by postal vote. Republican representatives in Wisconsin had taken legal action against Evers’ attempt to postpone the election. The Supreme Court in Washington decided on Monday evening to extend al voting deadline by six days. The two candidates, moderate ex-vice president Joe Biden and left senator Bernie Sanders, had refused to hold the election because of the health risk.

Democrats have announced that they will postpone their nomination convention, scheduled for mid-July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the week of August 17. By doing so, they want to avoid having to hold the traditional party assembly, at which the delegate officially elects the presidential candidate with much pomp in an election year, because of the coronavirus. Around 50,000 participants from all over the country were originally expected for the event, in addition to the more than 4,000 delegates, other celebrities and thousands of journalists. The likely candidate, Joe Biden, had already spoken out in favor of a postponement in an interview on Wednesday. The Republican Party Convention does not take place until the end of August. President Trump recently spoke out categorically against a cancellation. It is open whether the two events can take place.

With the Republicans, President Trump has already mathematically secured the never controversial nomination . With the victories in Florida and Illinois on March 17th, he achieved the necessary absolute majority of the votes, which is 1276 delegates among the Republicans. His only remaining competitor, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, subsequently ended his campaign. He had only one delegate vote in his account.

Former Vice President Joe Biden won the democratic marches in Florida, Illinois, and Arizona at the last major round of primaries on March 17. His left competitor Bernie Sanders, however, was unable to win. Biden won 19 out of 30 primaries before Sanders’ exit on April 8, Sanders only 9.

Because of the corona crisis, the primaries were moved to Ohio by Governor Mike DeWine. They should be made up for in early June. Also, Maryland and numerous other states have postponed their elections to June.
