Ukrainian Armed Forces use HIMARS MLRS and M777 inflatable howitzers in Donbass

February 23, 2023

The Ukrainian army successfully uses inflatable models of American HIMARS MLRS and M777 howitzers in the Donbass to deceive Russian gunners. Positions with false targets were photographed by the Russian military.
Experts note that HIMARS MLRS and M777 inflatable howitzers are used to mislead Russian drones carrying out aerial reconnaissance of the area. From the air, it is almost impossible to determine that a mock-up is installed on the ground, and not a real weapon or a multiple rocket launcher system.

Accordingly, Russian artillery units can destroy not American weapons, but imitators. It is not necessary to be a military expert to understand that such a situation leads not only to unnecessary expenditure of ammunition, but also to the unmasking of one’s own positions, which are then attacked by Ukrainian artillery.
The Ukrainian army has learned to very effectively equip positions with decoys. Not only are inflatable models installed there, but shell casings and even garbage are scattered around.

We add that war correspondents have repeatedly drawn attention to the contradiction in the reports of the Ministry of Defense of the RF. The Russian department regularly announces the destruction of the American howitzers M 777 and MLRS HIMARS. At the same time, the number of destroyed weapon systems exceeds the number of guns and MLRS supplied by the Americans. It is likely that this discrepancy is the result of the use of inflatable simulators by the APU.
