Blinken says he asked Lavrov to accept US prisoner swap offer

March 2, 2023, 6:38 p.m. – Public Information Service – TEH – Thursday, March 2, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken asked Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to support Washington’s initiative to exchange convicts. The relevant information was published by the TASS agency.
A short conversation between the diplomats took place in the framework of a press conference in India on the results of the last meeting of the foreign ministers of the G20 countries.

As Blinken clarified, the American side wants to secure the return to his homeland of a citizen of the United States, Paul Whelan, who is serving a sentence in Russia.
“I also raised the issue of the wrongful detention of Paul Whelan. The United States made a serious offer. Moscow must accept it,” stressed the Secretary of State.
