On the territory of the Smolensk region there are 9 major highways of federal importance with a total length of 877 km. In this regard, one of the problems in our region is the high level of accidents and the increasing number of deaths and injuries in traffic accidents, as well as the significant material damage caused by damage to vehicles and structures. roads.
In 2022, 179 traffic accidents were recorded on federal highways passing through the territory of the Smolensk region, in which 36 people died and 228 were injured.
“This is mainly due to the high speed of traffic flow, the presence of a large number of trucks engaged in international and long-distance transport, with the wrong choice of distance, non-compliance with the order of movement and exit into the lane intended for oncoming traffic,” said the commander of the RSB DPS of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Smolensk region, Police Lieutenant Colonel Gennady Leonidovich Doroginin.

In addition, traffic accidents involving pedestrians are of particular concern. It is such incidents on federal roads that are characterized by great severity of consequences.
Thus, out of 19 road accidents, 11 pedestrians died and 9 were injured. It should be noted that 14 accidents occurred due to the fault of the pedestrians themselves or to the fact of crossing the roadway in a prohibited place or being on the roadway without the purpose of crossing, as well as the lack of retroreflective elements.
Not uncommon on federal highways and traffic accidents involving wildlife. Last year, 2 people died and 6 were injured during raids on wild animals.
– Drivers should be especially careful on road sections where 1.27 “Wild Animals” traffic signs are posted. It should be remembered that wild animals are active during twilight and night hours, during the “breeding seasons” (spring, summer, autumn). Observance of traffic rules, including the speed limit, and careful attention by drivers in the area of the Wild Animals sign will greatly reduce the risk of accidents related to the sudden appearance of animals on the roads, believes Doroginin.

I would like to remind road users that there are no highways in the Smolensk region, and the maximum permissible speed outside settlements (in places where there are no restrictions) for cars, buses and motorcycles is 90 km/h, for trucks with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 tons – 70 km/h. Often drivers ignore these requirements.
Dear road users! The State Traffic Inspectorate strongly recommends that you follow traffic laws, exercise extreme caution and treat each other with respect on the roads. The health, life and destiny of people directly depend on compliance with these requirements and conditions. Everyone must realize this.
