Qatar: The Arab League calls on donor countries to fulfill their obligations towards UNRWA

Today, the League of Arab States called on donor countries to fulfill their obligations towards the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stressing the importance of bridging the financing gap in the agency’s budget, estimated at $70 million.

The university considered that failure to fulfill these obligations would weaken the work of the UN agency, highlighting that the work of UNRWA "It represents a safety valve for stability in the entire region".

In a related context, Jamal Rushdi, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, said in statements that Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the Agency, will speak tomorrow (Wednesday) before the meeting of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, about the situation of Palestinian refugees, and the challenges that UNRWA faces. On the financial level, and the risks that lie in wait for it in the event of failure to support its budget for the current year, and for the Palestinian refugees (who number five and a half million people), who depend on it in their daily lives.

It is noteworthy that the financial budget of UNRWA for this year is facing a shortfall of more than 70 million dollars, in light of the decline in the funding of many countries for the UN agency, especially the United States of America.
