Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Grossi: the IAEA no longer plans to create a demilitarized zone around the ZNPP

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has withdrawn from consideration the issue of establishing a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP). This was announced on Wednesday by the director general of the agency, Rafael Grossi.

According to him, there is talk at the moment of a complete cessation of hostilities around the nuclear power plant.

“It will be extremely difficult to carry out the verification process – more than a mile from the demilitarized zone, the territory will be extremely militarized. Therefore, we are not considering it (anymore), ”explained Grossi during a seminar at the non-governmental Council on Foreign Relations of the United States.

He added that it was now necessary to “ensure that the station is not attacked or used to attack”.

In early March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented on the lack of progress on creating a protection zone near the ZNPP. According to him, such an agreement was practically reached, but at the last moment it was blocked by Kiev.
