At least 23 people have died as tornadoes and severe storms hit the US state of Mississippi late Friday night, authorities told ABC television. The destructive element destroyed the city of Rolling Fork in the US state of Mississippi.
Search and rescue operations continue in Sharkey and Humphreys counties, about 110 miles north of Jackson, the state capital, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said, reported ABC. About 100,000 homes in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee were still without power as of early Saturday, according to Power Outage.
“We can confirm 23 dead, dozens injured, four missing as a result of last night’s tornado. We have many local and national search and rescue teams continuing to work this morning,” the Emergency Management Agency said on its Twitter account today.
The destruction center was less than 100 kilometers from the town of Rolling Fork in Sharkey County. “Most of the town has been destroyed,” including all of the businesses in the retail and retail section of the local freeway, former town mayor Fred Miller told Fox.
